The global gridded 0.5-degree soil database is based on the Harmonized World Soil Database (HWSD) version 1.1., which is a 30 arc-second raster database with over 16,000 different soil mapping units that combines existing regional and national updates of the soil information worldwide. The original HWSD was regridded to a spatial resolution of 0.5° by 0.5° by selecting the dominant soil type within each grid cell. 8 physical and chemical soil properties associated with the dominant soil type in each soil layer were then selected. The original HWSD version 1.1 tends to overestimate the bulk density in soils that have a high porosity (e.g., Andosols) or that are high in organic matter content (e.g., Histosols). Therefore, the bulk density values of these two soil types were corrected using the corresponding depth-weighted average values from ISRIC-WISE, version 1.0.
